Item transcription

A Chinese Farmer. Claiborne county has the honor of claiming the only Chinese farmer in Mississippi. His name is Quong Thomas, and the almond-eyed Celestial runs a farm of 100 acres near Port Gibson, where he cultivates a fine variety of cotton, all of which is shipped to the Orient. Thomas has been quite successful, and within the past few years has accumulated a snug amount in the savings bank.

One of eight inspected printings of the same account about a farmer near Port Gibson.

Reading limits

Source-ledger reading; no independent human or community review.

A newspaper assertion, not an independently established biography. Eight printings are not eight independent accounts.

Line breaks and end-of-line hyphenation joined; capitalization and apparent printed spelling retained.

Was Quong Thomas the only Chinese farmer in Mississippi?

That is the newspaper's claim, not a verified fact. It is also a claim that travelled: eight inspected printings across the state carry versions of this same account within twelve days. Eight printings are one account, not eight witnesses.

Does this tell me what he grew and where it went?

It asserts cotton, on a hundred acres, shipped to the Orient. Every part of that is the paper's assertion; no shipping record, deed or acreage return is quoted here.
